Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

Purpose

This major is designed to prepare students for graduate work and for jobs in industry as well as for medical and dental schools.

Fundamental Skills

The College of Arts and Sciences requires that students take courses meeting these Fundamental Skills Requirements to obtain any Bachelor of Arts degrees offered by the college. Please check the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin or meet with your academic advisor for more information.

  • English Composition
  • Intensive Writing
  • Mathematics (will be fufilled by major requirements)
  • Foreign Language
Distribution Requirements

The College of Arts and Sciences also requires students to take courses that meet particular Distribution Area Requirements to ensure basic education in areas outside of a specific major. The following is a list of these distribution areas. Please refer to the Bulletin for more information, view the Distribution Course Lists, or view the Approved Distribution Courses Appendix.

  • 1 Topics Course (take College of Arts and Sciences E103, E104, or E105)
  • 2 Arts & Humanities studies courses
    • College of Arts and Sciences E103 will also count here if taken
  • 2 Social & Historical studies courses
    • College of Arts and Sciences E104 will also count here if taken
Major Requirements

These general requirements must be met to obtain the degree.

  • Overall GPA in major must be 2.00 or better
  • 12 hours of the chemistry courses must be taken on the IUB campus
  • 122 total hours required (30 at the 300-400 level)
  • 26 senior hours in residence

Students must complete the following course work with a minimum grade of C– in each course:

  • 45 Credit Hours of Chemistry Including:
    • A315 - Chemical Measurements and Laboratory
    • A318
    • N330 - Intermediate Inorganic Chemistry
    • C341 - Organic Chemistry I Lectures
    • C342 - Organic Chemistry II Lectures
    • S343 - Organic Chemistry I Laboratory, Honors
    • C361 - Physical Chemistry of Bulk Matter
    • C362 - Physical Chemistry of Molecules
    • P364 - Basic Measurements in Physical Chemistry
    • C483 - Biological Chemistry OR C484 - Biomolecules and Catabolism
  • The following courses may NOT be counted in the 45 credit hours required for the major:
    • C103 - Introduction to Chemical Principles
    • C240 - Preparation for Organic Chemistry
    • G307 - Chemical Career Planning
    • G499 - Internship in Chemical Instruction
  • At least 6 of the remaining hours must be in lecture courses at the 400-level or above
  • At least 4 of the remaining hours must be in laboratory courses
  • Physics P221 and P222
  • Mathematics M211-M212
    • And one of the following:
      • M303
      • M311
      • M343
Recommendations:

Mathematics M311 is recommended over Mathematics M303 or M343
