Indiana University has a tradition of excellence across all areas of chemistry (analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, physical, and theoretical). We have nationally recognized research efforts in the development of new instruments and methodologies. Indiana University is a center of excellence for synthetic organic chemistry, and we have a long history of distinguished contributions to theoretical chemistry. We are currently developing exciting new programs in many emerging interdisciplinary areas such as in materials chemistry, nanoscale structures, biological materials, environmental chemistry, and proteomics. These cross-disciplinary programs provide a natural interface between our department and a range of industrial and academic partners around the world.

Indiana University is located in Bloomington, which is nestled in the rolling hills of southern Indiana. Bloomington is a small but vibrant city that couples an array of fine dining and lively entertainment opportunities with a relatively low cost of living. Bloomington is home to one of the best music schools in the nation and you can enjoy a range of cultural experiences year-round, including recitals, operas, and other musical events in the city. Bloomington also boasts a number of eclectic museums as well as permanent collections of art and rotating exhibits. The Hoosier National Forest and many nearby state parks provide trails for hiking and biking in the summer and for cross-country skiing in the winter. Metropolitan Indianapolis is an hour away.
